Rebuilding Failing Brick or Stone Steps
Most old St. Louis steps were built as a brick shell filled with rubble and mortar. Once water gets in, the fill breaks up, the shell bulges and the treads loosen. Patching the face does not fix that.
- Remove loose brick and stone; save what can be reused for matching
- Break out failed fill and check the footing — repair or re-pour it
- Rebuild a solid core, then re-lay risers in matched brick or stone
- Set new treads level with a slight pitch so water sheds off the front
- Repoint adjoining porch and cheek-wall masonry so old and new read as one

How much do stone or brick steps cost in St. Louis?
A straight run of 3–5 front steps in brick or block with a stone tread typically runs $3,500–$9,000 installed; wide entrance stairs, curved steps, limestone treads and landings cost more. A rebuild on an existing sound footing is less than new construction. We quote in writing after measuring on site.
Can you rebuild my crumbling front steps instead of replacing them?
Often, yes. If the footing and core are sound we remove the loose brick or stone, repair the base, and re-lay new or salvaged material with matched mortar. If the steps have settled or the core has broken up, we rebuild from the footing.
What materials do you use for steps?

How long does a step rebuild take?
Most residential step rebuilds take 3–6 working days including footing and curing time. Large entrance stairs or terraced garden steps are scheduled as a phased project.
